Verizon Wireless announced that it will soon follow AT&T in pricing broadband data services according to usage. That’s probably inevitable; data usage varies widely by customer, and no wireless carrier can afford to be the holdout that attracts the heaviest users with all-you-can-download flat monthly pricing. But it’s also good for customers: use-based pricing will create the financial incentives to develop ever-more-valuable information services for smartphones and the myriad other mobile devices in the works.
